学術誌「Nature Communications Earth & Environment」に8月24日付けで発表された論文によると、南極半島の西側のベリングスハウゼン海域で確認されているコウテイペンギンの5つのコロニーうち、4つのコロニーで繁殖が完全に失敗した可能性が高いという。
原因は海氷の減少だ。衛星画像は、ひなが十分に成長する前に海氷が崩壊してコロニーが消滅したことを明確に示していた。
